Why the U.S. Is Dropping in Happiness—and What That Says About Our Mental Health
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Why U.S. Happiness Is Dropping: A Mental Health Warning
The 2025 World Happiness Report dropped (in March, but I’m a little late to the game)—and for the first time, the United States didn’t make the top 20. In fact, we’ve dropped to 24th place, our lowest ranking ever! That’s a hard pill to swallow, especially for a therapist.
But when you dig deeper, the reasons behind this drop hit closer to home. They point to something many of us are feeling but not always saying aloud: We’re more disconnected, overwhelmed, and feel like we’re burning the candle at both ends.
The Loneliness Behind the Numbers
This drop isn’t just about politics or economics…this year’s report focused on the power of connection—how much happiness is influenced by things as simple as sharing meals and having someone to turn to when life gets hard. How many of us enjoy working from home and yet have fewer and fewer face-to-face conversations throughout the day? This kind of disconnection affects people of all ages, but it’s especially profound in older adults, many of whom are navigating retirement, health issues, and grief. Fewer people are gathering around the table.
More of us are eating alone, scrolling alone, and trying to keep it all together—alone. That’s where we are struggling most.
You’re Not Meant to Do This Alone
If any of this speaks to you or someone you know—if you’ve felt a quiet heaviness, a sense that something’s missing, or like you’ve been stuck in the rat maze—please know this:
You’re not broken.
You’re human.
And support is here.
At Life Matters Counseling, we believe healing happens in connection. At the end of the day, therapy is not about a diagnosis or a problem to be fixed. The power of therapy lies in connection.
We're a local clinic of licensed therapists in Davis County, Utah—but more than that, we’re people who believe in listening deeply, showing up authentically, and helping you build a life that feels like your own again.
